Any thoughts on this subject? Is there a danger of using the app to do this?
This is a GREAT topic Stephen. I’ve got some stuff to take care of right now but I want to lean into this. I totally hear you. My short answer is this: Use Solu, but also do the hard psychological work of addressing family of origin, or later life, trauma.
Thanks again for an important question. more to come…
re: Solu and Spiritual Bypass ––
As background for folks who may not have heard of the term “Spiritual Bypass” I’ll quote a Wikipedia entry here:
“Spiritual bypass or spiritual bypassing is a "tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks”. The term was introduced in the mid 1980s by John Welwood, a Buddhist teacher and psychotherapist. Clinicians in pastoral psychology have identified both beneficial and detrimental manifestations of behavior that could be described as spiritual bypass.”
I’m a sound man, not a psychotherapist or clinical pastoral psychologist. But I have done enough work around family of origin issues, and the resulting negative personality traits that arise from childhood trauma to be able to offer some personal thoughts. Not advice.
In my experience, I would say that Tone Therapy, either in the hardware n.o.w. Tone Therapy System or the Solu apps’s ToneStream, can function as an adjunct-accelerant to emotional healing work.
Tone Therapy can help one connect to one’s “True Self” and “Higher Power”––without bypassing the psychological work that may include the guidance and support of therapists, counselors, coaches, 12-step programs and deep personal, private inquiry such as journaling and psycho-emotional workbook study and practice. Solu Tone Therapy has the power to do this, in part, because its non-verbal, non-dualistic (“wholemaking”), tone and heart-based based stimulus provides a powerful compliment to the verbal, subject-object (dualistic or separate) “mental” work done in psychotherapy.
In my experience, rather than being an on-ramp to a speedy spiritual bypass, Solu Tone Therapy actually seems to bring the external teachers and teaching, the tools and techniques that one needs to engage with for a complete mind-body-spirit approach to healing and recovering from emotional trauma.
Many people have told us that n.o.w. Tone Therapy System (and I expect this to be true of the Solu app’s ToneStream) gave them new insights into their emotional state, that working with n.o.w. seemed to “call in” the very specific, external, emotional work guidance they needed at that particular time.
I would say that Tone Therapy does not help one bypass one’s trauma and need for psychological healing. Rather, it lays a comforting hand on one’s shoulder and brings encouragement to carry on doing the work that needs to be done at the emotional level. Tone Therapy helps one feel one’s True Self aided by one’s Higher Power, as one defines that.
Hope this helps.
